Top Stories for AI in Medicine

AI-powered healthcare tool, UpToDate, is helping doctors make better diagnoses by delivering personalized patient insights. It uses machine learning algorithms to analyze patient data, consider context, and provide doctors with potential diagnosis options. This speeds up the diagnosis process, improves accuracy, and aids in identifying rare diseases. UpToDate also enables physicians to stay abreast with the latest medical research. Doctors who have used the tool report increased confidence in their diagnoses. Despite the benefits of AI in healthcare, concerns around patient data privacy and potential misdiagnoses persist.

HealthCaters, a Berlin-based startup, is using AI to make preventative healthcare more accessible. The company offers portable boxes that can be used for health screenings and an app that provides personalized health plans. The company has received $1.2 million in seed funding led by a group of investors. HealthCaters also offers its services to corporates, including IBM, WeWork, and Barmenia, which can set up health screening days for employees. The startup aims to prevent people from getting sick in the first place, and its services are designed to help people advocate for themselves, especially across language barriers. The use of AI in preventative healthcare is becoming more common, and it has numerous applications in diagnostics and drug discovery.

Scientists at the University of Gothenburg have developed an AI tool that diagnose skin cancer with a degree of reliability matching that of dermatologists. The system improves on previous AI models by minimizing the number of false positives and negatives. It uses a technique called federated learning, which enables the AI to learn from a vast amount of data without breaching privacy guidelines. The AI system achieved a 95.9% sensitivity rate in detecting malignant melanomas, matching the human dermatologists' rate of 88-95%. Researchers believe this tool can greatly assist dermatologists and lessen their workloads.

TikTok Unleashes SALMONN

ByteDance, the creator of TikTok, has developed Salmonn, an AI model that can understand and process all kinds of audio, not just music or voices. This deep learning model can interpret numerous sounds in videos, such as dogs barking, cars honking, or waves crashing, and describe them in text.

While conventional models analyze sound based on its spectral content, Salmonn recognizes sounds based on their temporal and spectral characteristics. It can understand sounds in any environment and does not require a large amount of training data. This proves advantageous as collecting large datasets of diverse sounds is challenging.

Salmonn was trained on a dataset of 20,000 sounds, labeled into 632 categories. ByteDance believes that this technology will have numerous applications, including video and music production, healthcare, and assistive technologies for people with disabilities.
